The World Health Organization defines mental health as the state of mental wellbeing that enables people to cope with the stresses of life, realize their abilities, learn well and work well and contribute to their community, while being a basic human right that is crucial to personal, community and socio-economic development.

Neurological Disorders are diseases affecting the central and peripherical nervous system; i.e. the brain, spinal cord, cranial nerves, peripheral nerves, nerve roots, autonomic nervous system, neuromuscular junction and muscles. Whereas such disorders include epilepsy, Alzheimer’s disease, dementia, stroke, migraine and headache disorders, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson, neuro-infection, brain tumors, traumatic disorders and neurological disorders.

Although the evaluation and diagnosis of nervous system disorders can be complicated; various diagnostic tests may be conducted such as CT scan, EEG, MRI, electrodiagnostic tests, PET scans, arteriogram, cerebral spinal fluid analysis, evoked potentials, myelogram, ultrasound and neurosonography.

There are multiple treatments for neurological disorders that vary according to the condition and in some cases, it is possible to mitigate the symptoms with medications or surgery, while the overall objective of treatment is to improve the patient’s qualify of life.

The Department of Neurology at Al Salam Hospital works in partnership and cooperation with the other departments within the hospital, such as neurosurgeons, neuroradiologists and neuropsychologists, to provide comprehensive care for patients, in order to ensure that all patients receive the appropriate diagnostic tests along with both invasive and non-invasive treatments.
